The BC Forest Discovery Centre celebrates kids BIG this BC Day long weekend for 3 fun-filled days for families in and visiting the Cowichan Region. “We always have so much fun during the 3 days with all the kids and even the adults who are kids at heart," says Chris Gale, Manager at the BC Forest Discovery Centre.
“Train rides, entertainment, imagination station and activities for the kids, prize draws, our almost famous BBQ, mini donuts, and a great educational experience, are only a few reasons for kids of all ages to come out to the event. Added to the Saturday activities only will be 2 performances of 'Messages in the Dust' performed by the Seeds and Salt Theatre Co. The performances are family-friendly featuring 5 true stories and music from Vancouver Island history. Stories are retold in a dramatic and quick-paced physical style so that kids and adults are drawn into the exciting lives and events of the past.
Performances presented by the Mill Bay - Malahat Historical Society are only on Saturday at noon and 2pm and are included in your admission along with other activities and unlimited train rides. The 'Messages in the Dust' shows include: Murder and Mayhem, A Whale of a Tale (Mill Bay Whaling Station, 1865), Dirt on My Shovel (Nanaimo Mine Explosion, 1887), The Second Son (A British Remittance Man is banished to the colonies but finds his upper-class upbringing is inadequate for life here, the 1900s), Marvelous Miss Mabel (teaching at an isolated floating logging camp, 1927) and Whiskers, the Al Capone of Vancouver Island (Rum running during prohibition, 1931) The people and events portrayed are real but the stories have long been forgotten.
A reduced admission rate of $14 for Adults, $12 for Seniors, $10 for Children from 3 years to 18 years, and 2 years and under are FREE, making it an affordable day for the whole family. This event is included with membership. We'll be open from Saturday, August 3rd, to Monday, August 5th, from 10 am to 4:30 pm, with the last train departure at 4 pm.
Other events still to come this year include Labour Day, Halloween, and the popular Christmas Express. Investing in membership consists of a season’s pass allowing entry to the facility, the train, and all special events throughout the year, except Halloween and the Christmas Express which are fundraising events.
