6:30 PM to 8:00 PM

The Albert Head Intermediate Air Cadet Band will perform on the front lawns of B.C. Legislature as part of the 21st Annual Peacekeepers Memorial Service.

The memorial service is held annually on Aug. 9. The date recalls the deaths of nine Canadians killed when a missile hit their aircraft over the Golan Heights in 1974. Thirty-nine years later, the Golan Heights tragedy remains as the most Canadian lives lost in a single military operation since the Korean War. The annual memorial service is organized by the Canadian Peacekeeping Veterans Association.

As part of the memorial service, a parade - led by the 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron Pipe and Drum Band, followed by a platoon of veterans and a platoon of Canadian Armed Forces members - will step off, or leave, Menzies Street at 6:50 p.m. to march north, onto Belleville Street, and onto Legislature grounds to the Cenotaph.

The service begins at approx. 7 p.m.

Rear Admiral Bill Truelove, Commander of Maritime Forces Pacific, will be the Reviewing Officer for the memorial service. He and representatives of the veteran's community will lay tokens of remembrance at the Cenotaph. Lt. Jonathan Mok, an accomplished trumpeter and Cadet Instructor Cadre officer, will sound the one minute of silence. Throughout the service, the Albert Head Intermediate Military Band and 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron Pipe and Drum Band will provide musical support.

The memorial service will conclude at approx. 8 p.m., when the parade marches off the Legislature grounds.

The Albert Head Intermediate Military Band will be under the direction of Lt(N) Jos Vanderlinden, a professional musician with 32-years experience performing with military bands, including 11 years with Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy.

The Albert Head Intermediate Air Cadet Band is made up of 30 air cadets between 13 and 17 years of age who are on a six-week intermediate-level musician course at Albert Head Air Cadet Summer Training Centre. The cadets - from over a dozen B.C. communities - began musical instruction on July 8, performing at local events, including the Opening Ceremonies of the Sun., July 28 Harbour Cats game and Beacon Hill Concert in the Park on Fri. Aug 3. The intermediate-level musician course exposes the cadets to a variety of opportunities, including travel, performing at high profile community events, marching in community and memorial parades, and receiving instruction from professional musicians.
