Directors Notes:
Inspired by Hamlet and the techniques of Tom Stoppard, Humble Boy is a dark comedy about broken vows, failed hopes and the joys of beekeeping. All is not well in the Humble hive. 35-year old Felix Humble is a brilliant but troubled Cambridge astrophysicist in search of a unified field theory. Following the sudden death of his father, Felix returns home to be with his difficult and demanding mother. He soon realizes that his search for unity must be expanded to include clarity in his own chaotic life.

Additional Notes:
– English accents required for all roles
– Age descriptors below are how the character must appear. Actual age is irrelevant.
– Please come having read the script but a prepared audition piece is not necessary.

Characters:
– Felix Humble: Early to mid-30’s, an astrophysicist from Cambridge, verging on suicidal. He is brilliant but troubled and stutters throughout.
– Flora Humble: 55+, Flora is the beautiful mother of Felix. She is the head of the Humble estate, impatient and forthright and exudes power throughout. She believes she married beneath her and resents living in the Cotswolds.
– George Pye: 55+, George is an attractive, somewhat simple yet confident man, who drinks too much. He is set on marrying Flora.
– Rosie Pye: Late 20’s to mid-30’s, a nurse and mother of a 7-year-old daughter. She is the daughter of George and the former girlfriend of Felix. Rosie is a no-nonsense yet passionate young woman.
– Mercy Lott: 50-60, the friend and neighbour to Flora. Mercy is a kind and good-natured spinster, plain, somewhat prim and would dearly love to be Flora. As a result, she is almost slave-like to Flora’s needs.
– Jim: 55-65, the gardener and beekeeper of the Humble estate. He is wise with a quiet and unassuming demeanour.
