Go to the Arts Centre at Cedar Hill website for summer facility hours.
Big Ones and Little Ones represent the work of Shelby and Linda over the past 3 years and is the first retrospective of their diverse body of work. They both continue to work on large scale canvases up to 55"x 75" and canvases as small as 6” x 6”. Many of the paintings in the exhibition have been on view in the Gage Gallery Artists Collective where they are both members. Some of the paintings are on exhibition for the first time.
Vast or intimate, every aspect of nature has a way of reaching into the very depths of the soul as it simultaneously grounds us and sends our imaginations to the outer limits. Shelby and Linda interpret their natural surroundings while injecting their imaginations into their painting processes. This gradual transformation of nature into abstraction is an artistic tradition that has deep historical roots.
J. M. W. Turner painted many of his seascapes with a romantic expressiveness that brought them close to the point of pure abstraction. Shelby and Linda’s work has ties to Abstract Expressionism, like Arthur Dove and Marsden Hartley, as they seek a subconscious and spiritual expression of nature in the Canadian urban and rural landscape through the discovery of abstract motifs and expressionism. As seen in the work of landscape painter, Wolf Kahn, bands of vibrant, high key colours are employed to further the abstract qualities of their work. Shelby and Linda’s unceasing play with colour, value and painterly texture to create new possibilities within the expanding fields of their canvases.
