Brahms' A German Requiem

Why would a young man, in his 30’s, write a Requiem – a Mass for the Dead? The answer is found in the music of Johannes Brahms, who wrote his iconic A German Requiem over the course of three years – from 1865 to 1898. After the death of his mother, Brahms set texts from the bible that focus on the living and that express a theme of anxiety turning to comfort. This is no ordinary Requiem; it is Brahms’ longest work, one which puts the voices of the choir on an equal level with the orchestra. The result is a masterpiece of gorgeous, love-filled music. It is an artistic journey that audiences around the world have travelled for over a century.
Please join us for a performance that features two wonderful young soloists: Nadia Lurie, soprano, who won first place at the 2025 BC Performing Arts Festival; and Nathan McDonald, baritone, who sang with Malaspina Choir for its 2024 performance of Fauré’s Requiem. Our favourite string ensemble, the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra, will be joined by winds and timpani, plus Jenny Vincent on organ. Of course, the glorious voices of Malaspina Choir will bring you Brahms’ unforgettable melodies.
