Call Mr. Robeson: A Life, With Songs
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
The play chronicles the life of Paul Robeson, the African American actor, singer and civil rights campaigner. Robeson's appeal proved so worrisome to the US and Canadian authorities that his passport was cancelled in the early 1950s and for a while he was prevented from exercising his right to travel to Canada. He held a number of concerts at the Peace Arch border crossing between Washington State and British Columbia. Robeson's best known recording is Ol' Man River.
Piano accompaniment will be provided by Victoria’s Karel Roessingh.
Tickets available through Eventbrite.
The show played here two years ago to a sold-out crowd and promises to sell out again. This performance is co-sponsored by Victoria Multi-Cultural Society; Social Environmental Alliance; Victoria Black History Society; the UVic Department of History; UVic Cultural, Social and Political Thought Program; UVic Social Justice Studies.
