The fourth meeting of the 2019-20 Academic year will take place on Monday, 10 February at 4:30 pm in the Bob Wright Building, B150, UVic

Dr. Tana Allen (Associate Professor, Memorial University) will present a lecture entitled:

“Representations of Antiquity in Sid Meier’s Civilization: Game-play as a Model of Cultural Imperialism”

What makes Sid Meier’s Civilization 6 both so compelling and so repelling to audiences of both specialists and gamers? Civilization is a well-known video game that combines ancient classical references with medieval and modern historical figures and events. Set up as a turn-based strategy game, its goal is to reach victory conditions that come about from domination, technology, culture, religion, or endurance. This paper addresses the effect of a player taking on the role of a classical figure who is placed within a conglomeration of scenarios that ultimately reveal an anachronistic and potentially confusing set of circumstances.

The Classical Association of Vancouver Island is UVic’s organization for people interested in the Greek and Roman worlds. Monthly lectures by local and international scholars take place at UVic.
