Cob Oven Building Workshop
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
A wood-fired cob oven is an excellent way to make gourmet artisanal breads and pizzas to share with friends and family, incomparable to those baked in a conventional oven. Cob is an ancient natural building material made from clay and sand. Cobs natural ability to hold great amounts of heat (thermal mass) makes it an obvious choice for a wood-fired oven.
Workshop participants will learn how to:
- How to make a dry-stacked urbanite foundation for their oven using recycled concrete
- Insulate their oven using recycled glass bottles, as well as straw and clay
- Build a form out of sand for the oven dome
- Identify suitable soil for making cob
- Mix cob and use it to build the oven dome
- Make an oven door
- Efficiently burn wood to heat your oven for baking
Your Instructor: Sarah Way is a natural builder based in the Cowichan Valley. She was an apprenticing carpenter until she became engaged with the world of natural building in 2008, and has been stuck in the mud ever since! Having worked on projects from Vancouver Island to the Kootenays, as well as completing a six-month internship under Elke Cole at O.U.R. Ecovillage and attending various workshops along the way, she is well versed in a diversity of natural building systems including cob, light clay, straw bale, earthen floors and earthen plasters.
