CSRS Summer Lectures - First Lecture

Religion and Nationalism in Post-Communist Russia
Harut Harutyunyan, University of Munster, CSRS Post-Doctorate Fellow

Nationalism was one of the main problems troubling post-Communist countries after the collapse of Soviet Union. At the same time, there was an unexpected revival of religious persecution. In some cases, traditional religions were used by the Church and government leaders as a basis for discrimination against others. In Russia, the intolerance escalated especially during the war with Islamic Chechens. A discussion of former conflicts and the history of imperial expansion will help us understand the current transitional situation of this country.

Harut Harutyunyan studied theology in Armenia, Switzerland and Germany. He received his PhD from the University of Munsters Department of Ecumenical Theology and Peace Studies. His dissertation was on European integration and the role of Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox churches. Since 2008 he has been a research fellow in the Politics and Religion cluster of excellence at the University of Munster, Germany, working on the role of religion in political and military conflicts.
