Modeled after science, agricultural and mystic fairs, this event will provide diverse audiences with access to interdisciplinary explorations of art, science and ecology with an emphasis on DIY culture and community engagement.
Directed by Dr. Jennifer Willet (University of Windsor) and hosted by Open Space, this fair will present artistic methods, amateur innovations, folk and traditional knowledges of life in conjunction with advanced technology, and the hard sciences.
DIY LIFE will host artworks, workshops, performances and displays surrounding notions of ecology. Water – microbiology – sustainability – upcycling - biofutures – will all be explored through a variety of methods that will evoke humor, curiosity, and delight in audiences. For example, Willet will display a new work ‘Algae Organ’ a bicycle propelled street organ that grows and displays living spirulina algae. Audiences will be invited to enjoy live organ music while tasting living samples of algae – a superfood.
Other attractions will include; workshops, live music, performance art, hacker demonstrations, science and technology displays, food and ecology demonstrations. DIY LIFE highlights alternative imaginations of collaborating with life in our shared technological present and future.
