Strathcona Regional District presents an evening of emergency preparedness: Earthquakes, Tsunamis, and Vancouver Island – What We Know, What We Can Expect, and How We Can Prepare
Interested in learning about the risk of Earthquakes and Tsunamis in our Region? Join us Tuesday May 5 at the Tidemark Theatre.
7:00 to 7:45 pm
John Cassidy – Natural Resources Canada
A clearer picture of the earthquake risk on Vancouver Island, with a focus on the Strathcona Regional District will be discussed.
Major earthquakes have occurred about 20 times in the last 10,000 years, but it’s difficult to predict when the next “Big One” will happen. It’s the smaller, more frequent quakes that occur on shallow faults, nearer to major cities which should catch our attention.
7:45 to 8:30 pm
Teron Moore – Ocean Networks Canada
How does tsunami risk differ on the west and east coasts of Vancouver Island? What should we do depending on where we live? An explanation of tsunami risk and how to reduce the risk, with a focus on mapping and modeling, and early warning technology will be discussed.
8:30 to 9:15 pm – Questions & Discussion
