GAIAactivism, a youth network, is planning a Day of Gathering to promote the environment and help encourage youth to become engaged in their communities. Come to downtown Nanaimo and join us! Around the world, groups will be gathering to address issues related to protecting nature and the environment.

Our Nanaimo event begins at Diana Krall Plaza. Dignitaries attending include Nanaimo MLA Leonard Krog, Deputy Mayor Kipp, Councillors Anderson and Brennan as well as Environmental planner Rob Lawrance. High school students from SD68 will be present as part of field trips organized by individual schools. Greetings will be read from Jean Crowder, MP for Nanaimo-Cowichan. Following a climate change speech by the VIU group, Awareness of Climate change through Education and Research (ACER) the audience will move on to Maffeo Sutton Park where Charles Thirkill, a fish and wildlife consultant will talk on community involvement in environmental projects. ACER will also have booths for the public to view at Maffeo Sutton Park. Kim Goldberg, a local poet will present a poem entitled �Spawn� and Cassandra Elphinstone, a Students on Ice (SOI) Youth Delegate to The United Nations Rio+20 Summit on Sustainable Development will present (time permitting) some policy initiatives by the SOI team.
GAIAactivism is partnered with the organization Road to Rio+20. Our goal is to help empower youth, let them know that together they can make a difference in the world and bring awareness to the community about the need to protect our planet. Our small project in Nanaimo is part of a larger event occurring across the world. Come out on March 16 and be a part of our Day of Gathering or make your own environmental event between March 16 and 25th and join our �Day�.
