While its true that everyone has a story, Hayley Sales sounds almost fictional. The singer-songwriter/ actress grew up in Portland, Oregon, attending the private performing arts school, The Northwest Academy, before moving with her parents to an organic blueberry farm on Vancouver Island, Canada at the age of sixteen. Sales has interviewed the Dalai Lama, sung for the WWII Ace Pilots convention in Washington D.C at the age of 13, toured with everyone from INXS to a Hindu Saint from India, and self-penned and produced both her major label debut, 2007s Sunseed, as well as her sophomore album, 2011′s When The Bird Became A Book.
As a child, Sales learned her craft by singing and playing piano along with Judy Garland on her parents record player. Before reaching sixth grade, she had performed in over one hundred different plays and productions. By middle school, Sales was accepted into private performing arts school in Portland Oregon, The Northwest Academy, where she studied music, writing, acting, dance and film. She continued to study until graduating two years early, with honors, at sixteen. Inspired by artists like Ben Harper, Billie Holiday and Dave Matthews, Sales began to write songs during her teenage years both on piano and guitar. These multi-generational influences are prevalent in her music.
After graduation, Sales hunkered down in her fathers recording studio, GlassWing Studios, and began to learn the technical side of music. She recorded a full length demo album and created her own record label, Drifter Records, all before the age of eighteen. In 2006, Sales signed with Universal Music Canada.
Sales albums are entirely her vision: she wrote the songs, assembled the musicians, produced the tracks, and contributed acoustic guitar, piano and vocals. Both albums were recorded on her parents farm. Sunseed was released in 2007, the singles What You Want and Keep Drivin landing in the top 40 in Canada and likewise on the charts in Japan. Her sophomore album, When The Bird Became A Book was released in internationally in 2011 and 2012, featuring guest appearances by G. Love and Donavon Frankenreiter. Sales recently filmed a video for the single, Just Pretend, with director Josh Forbes (The Fray, Sara Bareilles).
Sales resonates with audiences around the world. Whether shes winning Best New Mainstream Artist at the Canadian Radio Music Awards, being named an ONeill Girls Ambassador, or appearing in her new guest star role on the TV show Cedar Cove, Sales is infectious. The next record is anticipated to record this fall, 2013.
