Newfoundland trumpeter Patrick Boyle embodies the jazz spirit by synthesizing a range of influences into a compelling original voice. He has been aptly referred to as a “trumpet personality” and “one of Canada’s top trumpet players and jazz musicians in general” by CBC Radio.

An in-demand session player not bound by genre, Patrick can be heard on more than 40 recordings and two critically acclaimed solo albums: "Still No Word" (2008) and "Hold Out" (2005). Patrick recently performed at Carnegie Hall with tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain and drummer Steve Smith. He has also performed with Duane Andrews, Curtis Andrews, Mike Billard, Bill Brennan, Uri Caine, Neil Conway & The Something Family, Bill Coon, Mickey Dolenz, Mike Downes, Andrew Downing, Mark Duggan, Bill Frisell, Great Big Sea, Jeff Johnston, Mike Murley, John Nugent, Fred Penner, Plants and Animals, Tim Ries, Casey Sokol, Ernie Tollar, Jim Vivian, and Ken Whitely in styles ranging from gospel to rock to bluegrass. In Victoria, Patrick performs regularly with his own group with Roy Styffe (sax), Oliver Swain (bass) and Josh Dixon (drums) as well as Oliver Swain’s Big Machine and the Kelby McNayr Quintet. He has performed across North America, Europe and Australia.

Patrick balances life as a performer with a strong dedication to academics. He completed his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Performance at the University of Toronto in 2012. His primary research interest is how improvisation, particularly collective improvisation in organizations, can help students negotiate situations of tension and anxiety, inside and outside of music. Patrick also holds an M.A. in Ethnomusicology from York University and a B.Mus from Memorial University. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses at Memorial as a sessional instructor. Patrick is a regular contributor to Canadian Musician magazine and an active clinician throughout North America.

Patrick has composed music for film, television, radio, and theatre. In 2010, he was commissioned by the CBC to compose and record ‘Well Enough Alone’, a multi-movement jazz suite which acknowledges the 60th anniversary of Newfoundland’s confederation with Canada. Patrick regularly creates original live soundtracks for silent films and video games.

He has studied trumpet with Chase Sanborn, Kevin Turcotte, and Donald Buell. While trumpet is his lingua franca, Patrick can also be heard on guitar, dobro, lap steel, and bass. And, if you’ve ever heard him chat with an audience between tunes, you’ll know that his real calling is stand-up comedy. Really.

At the University of Victoria, Patrick teaches courses in Jazz Theory, Improvisation, Arranging and Jazz History in addition to directing the Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Band.
