The Victoria Historical Society presents “How the ‘Killer’ Became the Orca” with Jason Colby on Thursday, November 22, at James Bay New Horizons, 234 Menzies Street, Victoria, BC V8V 2G7. Doors open at 7:15 pm for refreshments and conversation. A short business meeting at 7:45 pm will be followed by the speaker.
Today, there is no more prominent symbol of the West Coast than the orca. Yet just a few decades ago, killer whales were reviled and shot throughout the region.
Join historian Jason Colby for a provocative exploration of our transformed relationship with the ocean’s apex predator. Colby will incorporate material from interviews, archives, and personal explorations along the Pacific Coast, and he will reveal Victoria’s very special role in humanities changing view of orcas.
Jason M. Colby is an associate professor of environmental and international history at the University of Victoria and author of Orca: How We Came to Know and Love the Ocean’s Greatest Predator (Oxford, 2018).
