Wait Until Dark
by Frederick Knott
Directed by Mark Smith
Susan Hendrix lives with Sam, her photographer husband, in a basement apartment. She was blinded in a car accident a year and a half ago, before she and Sam met. He helps Susan develop her skills and confidence at managing her daily life without sight. As the play opens, Sam has gone to his studio in another part of the city to work with a client. Susan, smelling smoke, calls out for help just as a caller comes to the door. His name is Mike; he deals with the smoke (Sam left a burning cigarette in an ashtray) and introduces himself as a Marine officer who served in Italy with Sam. Other men arrive—Sergeant Carlino of the police and Mr. Harry Roat, who’s looking for his wife. Before the day ends, Susan’s skills and confidence will be tested beyond anything she might have expected.
