In Tune with Guy Few! (Clinic, Masterclasses, Concert)

To revitalize a part of what is now lost to Nanaimo—namely, the study of music at the post-secondary level—a series of music lectures, clinics, masterclasses and workshops is underway. The aim is to connect musicians and music lovers alike by inviting acclaimed professionals to share their craft and knowledge, and to offer opportunities to grow our skills, broaden our perspective, and deepen our connection to music. With that in mind, the “In Tune with …” series starts at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Saturday, August 29, featuring GUY FEW, Canadian trumpet virtuoso, pianist and vocal coach.

Starting as a child prodigy, Guy Few has been enjoying a great career in Canada and around the world. Some fifteen years ago, when he was the featured soloist with the Vancouver Island Symphony in Nanaimo, he played both a trumpet and a piano concerto in the same evening! Before the concert, he also visited the VIU Music Department, worked with music students, and performed a piece by Boyd McDonald in which the trumpet and the piano are played at the same time! Guy teaches at Wilfried Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, and will be in Nanaimo for the day. You can find out more about him here: https://www.guyfew.com

The day will start at 10 am with a clinic ($30) entitled "Sound the Trumpet!" It will be followed by Guy's speech about “Mokuso," featuring meditations for pain and stage fright.

One-on-one masterclasses will start at 1 pm and are open to participants ($80) and interested audience members ($20). If you or someone you know would like to take a masterclass with Guy, please register right away, as there is room for only eight 25-minute sessions. Pianist Donna Falconer will be available to accompany participants.

At the 7 pm concert ($40), Guy will be joined by Donna Falconer in performance of pieces for trumpet and piano, and piano four hands. By a special request, Guy will treat us to Boyd McDonald’s Concertpiece for Trumpet and Piano, playing both instruments at the same time.

A Day Pass ($80) is also available, allowing you to come and go as you please. It does not include masterclass participation, however, only attendance as a listener.
