Jazz Night at VIU: Cooker Quintet
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
The Cookers Quintet is a Toronto-based group steeped in the '50s and '60s Blue Note era, and they'll be playing VIU as special guests of the Jazz Studies program. Inspired by groups such as Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver, and Lee Morgan, the three leaders of the group contribute all original material.
The group has toured Canada three times so far, with this fourth tour taking them up to the Yukon and across BC. The leaders of the group are Ryan Oliver (tenor sax), Tim Hamel (trumpet), and Alex Coleman (bass). Both Oliver and Coleman are VIU alumni, and have gone on to record and tour the world with some of North America's finest musicians.
VIU's Jazz program and its educators provided a solid basis for both musicians who recall their time in Nanaimo as crucial in their development as jazz musicians. The Cookers Quintet has two CDs available (Vol.1 & Vol.2), both on the Toronto-based label Do Right! Music.
After their Oct. 13 evening performance, The Cookers will provide a clinic for VIU Jazz Studies students the next day, Oct. 14 at 11:30 am.
The public is welcome to drop into the Choral Room, Building 320, to listen in on the clinic.
