Coming to the Duncan Showroom on Sunday March 11, 7:30pm: Renowned Victoria drummer Miller’s exceptional Hammond organ-driven Parallel Universe Band will perform material from Miller’s latest release 3 Days in Winter along with soulful organ-jazz repertoire in the vein of giants of the genre Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff and Larry Goldings at the Duncan Showroom Duncan BC, 131 Station St.
Performing to packed houses and standing ovations in support of the release 3 Days in Winter (2015), the Jon Miller Quartet appears regularly onstage at area jazz venues including Pat’s Pub (Vancouver), the Georgia Strait Jazz Society (Courtenay), The Lighthouse (Nanaimo), McMillan Arts Centre, (Parksville) Char’s Landing (Port Alberni), Studio Live (Cumberland), Osborne Bay Pub (Crofton), along with the beloved Hermann’s Jazz Club, Northern Quarter, JazzFest Victoria, Cameron Bandshell and numerous Jazz Vespers presentations. The 9 track release 3 Days in Winter charted at #1 at several west coast radio stations.
Media attention for the band’s previous release Orchidology (2009) includes two Monday Magazine M Award nominations and ecstatic reviews with Rick Gibbs of Island Jazz stating: “together these players make a fine group and their debut album is an exciting addition to the superb recorded jazz being produced on the Island…this will likely be one of the top albums launched this year – it certainly deserves widespread play and can stand with the best music being produced in the country today.”
The band is led by McGill University Jazz Programme graduate and powerhouse drummer Jon Miller. Along with writing for and leading his quartet Miller held the drum chair for the Victoria Jazz Orchestra from 2013 to 2016, performing with many guest artists including Alan Matheson, Mike Allen, Mike Herriot and Andrew Homzy. While living in the US and Europe in the 1990’s he played clubs in Philadelphia, New York, Paris, Berlin and Monte Carlo with many renowned artists including guitarist Charlie Hunter and members of the Sun Ra Arkestra.
In addition to being a prolific and accomplished composer, guitarist Rob Cheramy is an extremely inventive and technically impressive jazz guitarist with a highly individual style. Rob has accompanied such legends as Tommy Banks, Herb Ellis and Paul Horn, and his playing and composing have received acclaim on recordings by Gord Clements and Roy Reynolds. A force to be reckoned with on the Hammond B-3 organ, Tony Genge has performed with many leading Canadian and international jazz artists and can be heard on the critically acclaimed jazz piano trio CD available from Roadhouse Records. His playing, writing and arranging can also be heard on recordings by Joe Coughlin and Paul Horn.
Saxophone marvel Monik Nordine’s electrifying alto and tenor work along with her accomplished compositions are among the quartet’s major assets. Nordine also leads her own trio whose latest release has received widespread accolades including a favourable mention in Downbeat.
Nordine also freelances with a host of exceptional artists including Jennifer Scott and Rene Worst and is director of the Victoria Jazz Orchestra, producing concerts with guest artists Ryan Oliver, Mike Allen, P.J. Perry, Andrew Homzy, Mike Herriott, Greg Bush and Chelsea McBride, among others.
