The 25th Lanterns for Peace ceremony at Swa a Lana Lagoon at Maffeo Sutton Park is an event for everyone including families and children.
The ceremony is to commemorate the anniversary of the first use of the atomic bomb when the City of Hiroshima was reduced to ashes in 1945.
The City of Nanaimo has declared August 6th Hiroshima Day in Nanaimo. This is in keeping with Nanaimo’s status as a nuclear-weapons free city and with past proclamations by the City. Harp music will precede and follow the ceremony which begins at 9 pm with the reading of the Proclamation by Mayor Leonard Krog. The program will include song, harp ensemble, words from Tami Hirasawa from the Central Vancouver Island Japanese Canadian Society and brief messages from others. The public is invited to help launch the 35 lanterns at 9.30. The lanterns are pulled by a kayak returning them to the shore to be ready for next year.
The ceremony is organized each year by the Nanaimo chapter of WILPF, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, the oldest women’s international peace group beginning in 1915.
