The Vancouver Island Collaborative of the Cascadia Green Building Council (Cascadia) is sponsoring a design competition to incorporate an integrated wastewater treatment plant into the Esquimalt Village redevelopment, and to create a �complete, compact and energy-efficient community�. The proposed plant would be installed below-ground and provide tertiary processing of approx 15 million litres of sewage per day from the existing gathering system that services Esquimalt, View Royal and Vic West. The facility will supply heat, electricity and agricultural-grade water for the community and will eliminate the need for the McLaughlin Point mega-plant that was recently rejected by area residents.

The project will be Canada�s first living community: self-sufficient for heat, water and energy, with no net greenhouse gas emissions and restorative of its site ecology.

The June 21st Technical Workshop is open to design competition entrants and public alike.
