Five Days of Commemoration Planned for the 40th Anniversary of Miners Memorial, June 11 - 15 2026.

When the Cumberland mine workers descended into the coal caverns, they faced the toughest of work environments: cramped, wet, dark, and dirty. There was a constant fear of danger at every turn, with roof collapses and flooding both common risks. The Cumberland coal seams had a reputation for expelling gas, increasing the likelihood of explosions.

Over 300 men and boys died in Cumberland’s mines. The families of the deceased not only lost their loved ones but often their company housing as well, and received no compensation. Legislated racism meant that indentured Chinese workers often earned half the amount as white workers for the same jobs, and the names of Chinese Canadian and Japanese Canadian workers were often not recorded when they were killed.

During this period, the death of labour activist, Albert ‘Ginger’ Goodwin, sparked Canada’s first general strike in 1918 in Vancouver. This strike was the precursor to the Winnipeg General Strike – a defining moment in Canadian history.

Continuing a legacy of activism of over 120-years, Miners Memorial recognises and commemorates the workers who tragically lost their lives, and those who fought for improved working conditions.

Everyone is invited to join the 40th Anniversary of Miners Memorial, which will host Juno-winning singer-songwriter Maria Dunn, live in concert on Thursday, June 11, and a labour history walking tour and Songs of the Workers on Friday, June 12. As per tradition, Saturday will start with a pancake breakfast, followed by graveside vigils, a community luncheon and “Celebrating 40 Years” - a history panel about labour activism and Miners Memorial. There will also be music workshops, guided tours of the museum, and a labour history canoe tour
