Nanaimo community forum: Tankers, toxics and climate change
add to outlook add to google calendar remind me
Youre invited to a community forum to learn more about two burning issues facing Nanaimo. Kinder Morgans pipeline and tanker expansion and Metro Vancouvers proposed garbage incinerator at Duke Point are both toxic projects that put our local economy, environment and health at risk, and push us ever further towards catastrophic climate change.
A new pipeline, proposed by Texas-based corporation Kinder Morgan, would bring over 400 tankers a year through the Salish Sea carrying the dirtiest oil on earth. One spill could devastate the marine environment, coastal communities and local jobs. Meanwhile, Metro Vancouver is looking at Nanaimo as the site of a massive new waste-to-energy incinerator that would pump toxic pollution into Nanaimos air, land and water, and produce more carbon emissions per unit of electricity than coal-fired power plant.
A different future is possible. Join us to learn more about both of these projects and the links between them, and find out how you can help protect our coast, our communities and our climate.
A town-hall style discussion will follow presentations from:
Sheila Malcolmson, Chair of the Islands Trust
Caitlyn Vernon, Sierra Club BC
Eoin Madden, Wilderness Committee
Alexandra Woodsworth, Georgia Strait Alliance
With special guest and slam poetry champion Johnny MacRae.
