Our Coast on Canvas: The Life and Works of E.J. Hughes (1913-2007).

Vancouver Island artist, E.J. Hughes, actively painted British Columbia coastal landscapes up until his death in 2007. Broader appreciation for his work developed later in his career; one of his paintings, Fishboats, Rivers Inlet, sold for $980,000 in 2004.

Painting for more than 70 years, Hughes' depictions of Nanaimo Harbour, Gabriola Island, CPR ferries, fishboats, and villages, trace the especially formative eras of the cultural and industrial development of our coastlines and communities. A mural painted on a dining room wall of Nanaimo's old Malaspina Hotel in 1934 is one of Hughes' earliest works.

Marie and Mike Egan will be our interpreters for our E.J. Hughes evening.  Marie is currently a docent at the Nanaimo Art Gallery (formerly at the Vancouver Art Gallery).  Her partner Mike has experience making Audio/Visual presentations for the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The Egans will explore the questions:

-What is E.J. Hughesconnection to the Group of Seven, and fellow BC artist Emily Carr?

-Where did E.J hughes spend his childhood years?

-What contributed to E.J. Hughes' fame across Canada and internationally?

-What were his contributions to the Canadian art scene, and to Vancouver Island specifically?

The Nanaimo Historical Society looks forward to your attendance as the Egans contribute the benefit of their research and insight into E. J. Hughes and his visions of our lands and sea.
