10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Two weeks of fun family heritage activities will keep children entertained during spring break.

The coal mining themes complement the new feature exhibit, Extension, BC: Divided in Solidarity, and the popular Shipwrecked returns for another year. The activities are designed for children ages 5-12 years old to participate in, along with their parents, grandparents, or caregivers. Admission is by donation to the Nanaimo Museum.

The theme from Family Day weekend this year, Olympics @ the Museum will return for two days, March 19 and 21, 10:00am to 2:00pm. It features a torch craft and mini winter sport games in the gallery, in addition to the engaging activities debuted in February. On March 22, from 10:00am to 2:00pm, the Shipwrecked theme will help visitors get ready for Pirate Fest weekend with a scavenger hunt and pirate-themed crafts and activities. Self-guided Family Discovery Days take place all day on Fridays & Saturdays March 19-31.

“The second week tells the story of coal mining in Nanaimo, from geology to the Snuneymuxw First Nation, to the Hudson’s Bay Company,” says Steph Kveton. “We’re excited to be linking the activities with our new feature exhibit, Extension, BC: Divided in Solidarity.” Special features take place between 10:00am-12:00pm and include hands-on activities and guided tours of the coal mine and historic Miner’s Cottage. Coal-themed days are March 20, and March 26 to 29, from 10:00am to 2:00pm. [Check our website for a more detailed look at each day’s activities]

Activities are available on a drop-in basis. Allow at least one hour for children to complete the activities. Caregivers must be present at all times. Admission is by donation, which includes the day’s spring break activities and museum visit. The Nanaimo Museum is open Monday-Saturday from 10:00am-5:00pm.
