6:30 PM to 8:29 PM

Societal factors send powerful messages to girls and young women that certain attributes are unacceptable, namely being overweight and unattractive. The clearest message to girls from the media is that being "hot" is a social imperative. Unspoken rules, constant assessment by peers and a bombardment of media advertisements (TV, social media sites, music videos) leave some girls feeling vulnerable, helpless and confused. It doesn't have to be this way!

In this workshop, parents, guardians, educators and community members will learn strategies to support girls to think critically about the media. By exposing media manipulation, girls can feel a sense of empowerment, confidence and connectedness.
