CUBAN JEWEL TOURS BC This summer, a fascinating and unique sound is coming to cities and towns around BC. If you enjoy great voices full of joy, catchy arrangements and Latin grooves, you’re going to love this sound.

Novel Voz, an internationally reknowned vocal jazz septet from Havana Cuba, will be touring the province June 19 to July 17 with their BC Goodwill Tour, making stops in Nanaimo, Lantzville, Victoria, Ladysmith, Nanoose, Port Alberni, Vancouver, Courtenay, Duncan, Salt Spring Island, Coquitlam and Harrison Hot Springs.

The highlight of their tour will be their appearance as Artists in Residence at International Choral Kathaumixw July 5 & 6 in Powell River. What makes their sound so intriguing is their stunning vocal imitations of instruments, such as percussion, strings, and piano, to accompany their a cappella singing.

Described as a “vocal orchestra”, this ensemble of 4 men and 3 women has been making music together since 1999. They have taken part in international festivals across Venezuela, Colombia, Canada, the UK, France, Russia, Austria and more. They have recorded 3 CDs and have approximately 10,000 followers on Facebook. Novel Voz has a special relationship with Canada due to an affiliation with Canada Cuba Sports and Cultural Festivals, a company that organizes arts, sports and education programs in Cuba for Canadian students, sports teams, and choral groups. At the heart of Novel Voz’s repertoire is the Cuban music they’ve grown up with—son, chachacha, bolero and rumba; they also work with different rhythms, like samba and progressive tango, jazz classics and well-known international music.

Their arrangements possess real freshness and are complemented with professional vocal techniques and crisp choreographies, to allow an active exchange with their audiences. With 30 plus songs in their repertoire, Novel Voz will deliver a performance that will leave their fans wanting more.

You’ll have 3 opportunities to see Novel Voz in concert nearby: On Wednesday, June 22, they will perform at 7pm at St. Philip-by-the-Sea Anglican Church at 7113 Lantzville Rd; tickets are $20 at the door. On Monday, June 27, they will perform at 7pm at Nanoose Place at 2925 Northwest Bay Rd; tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for teens (children 12 and under are free). July 8 to 10, Novel Voz will perform at the Vancouver Island MusicFest at the Comox Valley Exhibition Grounds in Courtenay.
