Wear something PURPLE! Join us to celebrate the increasing numbers of Western Purple Martins, a threatened species in BC that almost disappeared from our province. The population had declined to 5 breeding pairs by 1985. Thanks to the efforts of 100s of people over about 30 years and the installation of 1500+ nest boxes, the population has now increased to over 1,000 pairs.
Learn more about the successful BC Purple Martin Nest Box Recovery Program at table displays and talking to the Program Coordinators. See all the bird activity at the largest colony on Vancouver Island where about 80 pairs are nesting. Hear what a successful Purple Martin colony sounds like. See adult birds feeding young at a real time nest cam. Participate in the banding of Purple Martin nestlings at 3 pm. Hear stories about Purple Martin activities around the Strait of Georgia and other parts of Canada.
Display tables and light refreshments will be available.
Come and enjoy our purple milkshakes!
