Join us this year for Lights, Camera.....Relay as we draw the curtain on Nanaimo's last Relay. With Top Men and The Big Mess performing, we are going out with a BANG!
The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life in Nanaimo is a 6 hour event, where teams of 3-15 people take turns walking, running or strolling around a track. All in support of cancer research and supporting local cancer patients. Teams consist of individuals representing businesses, neighborhoods, community groups and/or families and friends.
Participants that register online are given a webpage where they can share their Reason to Relay, set a fundraising goal, send emails to their friends and family, and track their progress. Each participant is asked to raise at least $100.
On Relay day, teams pitch tents that they can decorate in their team’s theme, to serve as their headquarters within “Tent City”. Food, entertainment, activities, contests and the victorious theme of survivorship and hope make Relay For Life a memorable event, with most participants returning year after year.
Taking part in this heart-warming event creates a strong community of people striving to reach a common goal – to beat cancer. Cancer survivors are invited to walk the first lap of the Relay - the Survivor’s Victory Lap – to acknowledge and celebrate their courage in their struggle with the disease. Their caregivers – friends, family and supporters – are encouraged to walk beside them, allowing Survivors to acknowledge their appreciation for those who have walked beside them throughout their battle with cancer.
Watching hundreds of survivors walk proudly around the track is inspiring and touching. Survivors are free to register and we have a wonderful catered dinner sponsored by The Coco Cafe for yourself and a guest following the survivor lap.

Perhaps some of the most emotionally moving moments of the evening, and some of the most vivid memories are associated with the Luminary Ceremony, which takes place at approximately 10pm. The bags are filled with sand and a special candle, and in a moving ceremony after sunset, these luminary bags are placed around the track and lit. The lights from these hundreds of bags are like a beacon and guide the Relayers.
