Written and Performed by Justin Carter
As a benefit in support of the Megan Newton Memorial Award in Theatre, Justin Carter revives his hit solo show, Son of Africville, in partnership with Intrepid Theatre for one performance, Friday June 21 at 8 pm at the Metro Studio. The play was originally read as part of Puente Theatre's Work Play, appeared as an Intrepid Theatre YOU Show, and then appeared in Uno Fest in 2011. Since then it has toured across Canada, including to the SuperNova festival in Halifax.
SON OF AFRICVILLE is an autobiographical story of a mother and son reuniting, after twenty years, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Their roots stem directly from historic Africville, the largest and oldest black community in Canada, until it was bulldozed back in the 1960s. It is the heartwarming story of a young mans journey back to a mother who always loved him, but due to the harsh realities of life, paranoid schizophrenia, and drug use, could not keep him. Performer/creator Justin Carter relives this reunion through story, and song, in a poignant and humorous performance.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, and raised mostly on the West Coast of Canada, JUSTIN CARTER has been a performer on and off for the last 18 years. His many artistic endeavors include dance, the William Davis Centre, film, commercials, a five year stint with the Throw Us A Line comedy improv troupe, Atomic Vaudeville, the Victoria Fringe Festival, Sin City: The Improvised Soap Opera, and he has worked as a drama teacher at Eagle Arts Academy.
