Speaking Pictures: A Poetry Workshop

Poet, activist and educator, Susan Rich’s newest publication Cloud Pharmacy includes an exploration of Hannah Maynard, a wildly inventive professional photographer based in Victoria from 1862 - 1918. Susan will lead a workshop on ekphrasis poetry which simply put means poems written about visual art. You will examine famous models of the form; read recent examples by contemporary poets, and sharpen your powers of observation and description. Finally, try your hand at writing poems on actual works of art on display in the museum. All levels of writers are welcome — from absolute beginners to advanced practitioners.
The workshop will include:
- A Powerpoint presentation providing an overview of ekphrastic art and poems side by side
- Generating new work through a series of guided writing exercises
- Participants will be provided with a “meaty” handout full of resources on poetry and art
- Guaranteed large dosages of renewed energy for all
