Presented by Open Space for one-night only, The Line is a contemporary dance work where the physical movement, live music and visuals are integrated. It will be performed on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 8:00 p.m.

The Line by choreographer Lori Hamar uses a clothesline to physically depict commonality among people and the individual struggle toward developing a sense of others. Dancers Francesca Frewer and Stacey Horton move from confronting the line to being suspended in clothing hanging on the line.

Linda Bouchard is the composer of the score and the creator of the video component of the performance. Bouchard has designed a visual environment, where images progress in an imperceptible progression of light. The ensemble Continuum Consort will perform live. Their presence is integral to the choreography through engagement with dancers, live video, and manipulation of the clothesline.

The Line is a narrative of perceptions that depicts the space between our collective quest for human rights and personal struggles for self-transformation. The musical score explores the writings of three Nobel Peace Prize winners; excerpts from Martin Luther King, the Dalai Lama, and Aung San Suu Kyi are whispered, spoken, and sung.

Continuum Consort has collaborated on various pieces with triPOD dance collective, and arranged for Bouchard to collaborate with choreographer Lori Hamar in the development of this new work. A creation residency hosted by Artspring Theatre, took place on Salt Spring Island in 2013 with Continuum’s members, Kay Cochran, Douglas Hensley, Elizabeth MacIssac and Emily Nagelbach, and dancers Brandy Baybutt and Matilda Cobanli.

Bouchard’s composition is composed for soprano, flute, guitar, and viola. It features three sections-- Fever, No One Special, and A Door in My Heart, performed in any order as determined by the choreographer.
