Based on Frances-Hodgson Burnett's classic novel, The Secret Garden tells the story of a young orphan, Mary Lennox, sent from India to her Uncle's misty, grief-shrouded estate in Yorkshire, England. Mary’s determination to restore the beauty of a long-neglected and secret garden is embraced by many joyful characters in Misselthwaite Manor. With the help of the spirits of Mary’s former life in India, as well as her new friends, Mary is able to heal her past, all the while discovering the courage a person can have, if they are willing to grow.
“The Secret Garden reveals the resiliency and courage of the human condition and the belief in the spirit of healing and personal growth,'' says director Jennifer Kelly. “The courage of a child whose resiliency transforms grief and loss into hope and love is represented through the nurturing of the garden. Bringing a garden back to life transcends into restoring the household and all who live there back to life.” The story explores the need for companionship, friendship, and love, and reveals the fragility of the human condition and the profound belief in the spirit of transformation. Through the fortitude of a child and the metaphor of nurturing a garden back to life, we see grief and loss transformed into love and healing.
“The Secret Garden is a timeless classic for people of all ages,” says Kelly, who not only directed, but provided vocal coaching for the production. “Audiences will connect with the heartfelt story, the enchanting musical score and the message that healing and growth can transform our lives, whether we are a child or an adult.”
