After charming audiences at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2017, this free-wheeling comedy drama makes its first trip to Canada for the Victoria Film Festival. In classic road-movie form, Waterboys tells the story of a mismatched egotistical father and his emotionally sensitive son as they embark on an unusual journey which heals their broken bonds.

Victor (Leopold Witte) is a successful crime writer in Holland, but it’s been a while since any of his books have garnered attention abroad. His latest work, set in Edinburgh, presents an opportunity to travel to Scotland and embark on a publicity tour. On the eve of the trip, Victor’s womanising ways catch up with him when his long-suffering wife decides to leave him. Serendipitously, Victor’s son Zack (Tim Linde), a self-conscious and self-deprecating cellist, has also just been kicked out by his girlfriend and needs some company. As we follow the pair on their journey through Scotland’s beautiful Highlands, trying their hand at fly-fishing, scoring tickets to see the band which gives the film its name, and indulging in hedonist drinking and tomfoolery – we hold out hope that, despite their extreme differences, Victor and Zack will both journey towards their own versions of emotional maturity and wisdom.

Set to a soundtrack of Scottish folk rock band The Waterboys, director Robert Jan Westdijk blends warm humour, engaging lead performances and stunning settings in this charming and unexpectedly thoughtful film.
