The East Van Jug Band specializes in traditional jug band music. They play favourites and lesser-known selections by The Memphis Jug Band, Jelly Roll Morton, and other pioneers of 1920s Americana; as well as original music rooted in the tradition. This band blurs the lines between folk, country, jazz, ragtime, and chamber music, and has a blast while doing so!
Featuring Clara Rose (violin; The End Tree, Oliver Schroer’s Twisted String, The Burying Ground), Jack Ray (banjo; Milk Crate Bandits, Angus & Julia Stone), Arnt Arntzen (guitar, banjo; The Brothers Arntzen, Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks), and Jen Hodge (bass; Jen Hodge All Stars, Company B Jazz Band, Bria Skonberg), this group produces a joyful and rhythmic feeling in all who hear them. With youthful energy, musical sensibilities, and cheeky vocal harmonies, East Van Jug Band creates vibrant music that wouldn’t be out of place 100 years ago. Their debut album, Live at the Jericho Folk Club, was recorded in May 2017 as part of the Jericho Folk Club’s regular concert series in Vancouver.
The East Van Jug Band feels at home playing music in a pub, a club, a school, a boat, a bus, a dance hall, a grocery store, or your living room!
