2. John Harper, VP Coastal & Ocean Resources

2013 represents the 26th year of business (est. by John Harper in 1987) for Coastal & Oceans, a company specializing in marine and coastal research. The company, now located in Royal Oak, spent much of its early life in Sidney and was at the SBC initial meeting. In 1997 Brian Bornhold became a co-owner and in December 2012, the company was sold to Moran Environmental Recovery (MER), a US company based on the east coast providing oil and chemical response and cleanup services throughout the eastern US seaboard. MER has recently opened a Seattle office and has aspirations in the Pacific Northwest.

�Coastal & Oceans: from Basement to Multinational\"

For years, Coastal & Oceans operated from a basement in North Saanich and has gradually evolved to be an important component of a multinational company. Believe it or not, this was not the plan� in fact there was no plan. In 2012, Coastal and Oceans gross revenue was about $1M, had 8 staff and with approx. 80% revenue from the USA and a further 10% from out of province. Coastal & Oceans primary business is coastal habitat mapping � the ShoreZone system � now applied to over 100,000 km of shoreline that includes the entire tidal shorelines of Oregon, Washington, BC and Alaska. The coastal habitat mapping is driven by a number of factors but concern about the impact of oil spills is the primary driver � oil spills end up on shorelines. John will talk about this evolution from his basement to the multinational realm.
