Were the Dark Ages Actually Dark?

The Middle Ages or “Dark Ages” are often perceived as backwards and brutal – hailed as a time of intellectual retreat when religion kept scientific progress at bay. While that perception remains prevalent throughout educated and mainstream society, medieval scholars have given a very different account, dismissing the traditional view as false-headed and partly based on propaganda. Moreover, they see a medieval worldview not as an enemy of science, but rather as a fundamental player in its development.

Oscar Clemotte will explain how, describing the contributions of medieval thinkers to modern knowledge. Dr. Clemotte is a philosophy professor at Vancouver Island University, where he has been teaching since the fall of 2000. His main areas of scholarship are philosophical anthropology, moral philosophy, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of religion. He also has a dedicated interest in medieval philosophy, and has taught both upper and lower level courses in this area.  https://socialsciences.viu.ca/institute-practical-philosophy/events-2
