Presented by L’Arche Comox Valley and the Comox Valley Women’s Business Network
Written by Steve Hill
Borrowing from the Beatles’ song, “will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m 64?” the play involves six older women in current day Comox Valley facing significant life transitions. TRISH, is a breast cancer survivor and active dragon boater; SONJA, a recent widow & new comer to the Valley, SONJA tries internet dating; MJ is a fun & quirky wellness expert on women’s healthy aging; ALEXANDRA is a successful executive and wine connoisseur who faces her mother’s dementia and an unfaithful husband; JOAN is a shut-in on Remembrance Day with family secrets to tell; and, STREETWOMAN, a lady with a mysterious past and uncertain future.
When I’m 64 is a rare play giving voice to the rich tapestry of mature women’s experience, and gives rare opportunities for mature actresses to sink their teeth into meaty roles with humor and poignancy.
Best selling author, Katherine Gibson, wrote in the Echo & Record, “When I’m 64…is funny, poignant, authentic…Hill has real talent getting inside the hearts and heads of female characters.”
“Ode to Older Women – Tales of struggle, triumph.” is how Victoria Times Colonist theatre critic Adrian Chamberlain describes the new play by Comox Valley playwright, Steve Hill.
The Artistic Director of Victoria’s Shakespeare by the Sea calls it, “The best writing for women since Lillian Hellman.”
