9:00 AM to 3:30 PM

From the massive mastiff to the mini maltese, dogs of all sizes and breeds have been a part of our lives for thousands upon thousands of years.

Come to our Youth Workshop: Canine Companions at the BC SPCA Cowichan & District Branch and discover how these animals became our best friends and why some people prefer the poodle while others are crazy for Catahoulas. Even better, unlock the secret to how dog lovers have found the best of both worlds with an unbeatable mixture of two, three or even four different breeds! Become the expert in your family on matching people up with their perfect pooch after exploring dog behaviour, characteristics, training and unearthing the histories of all sorts of breeds.

At this workshop you will be making a difference in the lives of dogs you know and dogs at the shelter, here's how:

Take a VIP tour of the BC SPCA Cowichan & District Branch and find out why so many dogs end up in the shelter and what you can do to help dogs find their forever homes*

Watch a professional dog trainer, Sylvia Koczerzuk from Walkabout Canine Consulting, teach dogs using positive reinforcement, and ask all your burning questions about dog behaviour;
Learn firsthand from a dog how to safely interact with our furry friends

Go on a breed scavenger hunt, play canine safety tag

Play other fun games and make creative crafts like healthy dog biscuits and a biscuit pouch while discovering how to care for your canine companions

Meet SPCA dog walkers and learn about what they do to help dogs

*Please note that participants in the Canine Companions workshop will not be able to interact with shelter dogs. The participants will have the chance to interact with specially selected and temperament tested dogs belonging to guest speakers and workshop staff.
